GENERAL MANAGER REPORT - DECEMBER 2013

NEWS

New Proofreading Quizzes, enhancements to Formatting Quiz

Our new proofreading quizzes were installed in mid-December. These quizzes make it necessary for a volunteer to have passed the Moderate Proofreading Quiz and Tutorial, Part 1, quiz prior to requesting access to P2 and the Moderate Proofreading Quiz and Tutorial, Part 2, prior to requesting access to P3. The Formatting Quiz underwent a facelift.

Thanks to acunning40 for putting the quizzes together and keeping them aligned with changing guidelines. And thanks to jmdyck, for his efforts in getting them installed.

GENERAL MANAGER REPORT - JANUARY 2013

NEWS

January was my first month as General Manager. I've received a lot of input from volunteers throughout our organization and am keeping track of ideas and suggestions. Change isn't usually fast is such a large organization as ours (it's important that we remain stable), but I'm definitely open to change.

I have heard from some members that they would like the GM Report to encompass more than the listing of our monthly statistics. Consequently, in this Report, I have added some comments about the significance of some of the figures, and have also done some re-organization of the information to make the numbers stand out a bit more.

I'd like to hear from you, however, in the  Discussion of General Manager: Updates and Announcements thread about what you'd like to see (or not see) in the GM Report. Are there statistics and information we should provide that we're not providing -- and are we providing statistics and information that nobody cares about. Please let me know.

OVERVIEW OF THE MONTH

It's been a busy month -- We've found volunteers for our important BEGIN PM work! As you'll notice from our statistics, they've been busily providing more English and French BEGIN projects. We also found editors to help Constanze with the DP Blog!

A third draft of a new Privacy Policy is being reviewed in our forums.

As you'll notice, the number of new volunteers grew in January. However, our percentage of volunteers staying over 7 days is greatly reduced. This percentage is a clear drop from previous months. I'm hoping that this number will go up again with the increase in BEGIN projects and the increase in P1 projects. I'd like to thank the Project Managers, Project Facilitators and Squirrels for there efforts to get material into the rounds.

Naturally, though, adding material to the earlier rounds, ends up with it ending up in PP, sometimes for a long time. I am very pleased to see that  three PPers have received Direct Upload capability in January and can help us reduce the PP numbers.  Over the next few months, we'll work on finding ways to reduce this backlog.

Our F2 evaluators have been working hard to keep the F2 evaluations up-to-date and Louise Davies has graciously agreed to do the evaluations for the outstanding P3 applicants. We will shortly be posting a request for P3 evaluators so she can concentrate on other things.

GENERAL MANAGER REPORT - FEBRUARY 2014

NEWS

The Blog Team has begun to publish more of its enjoyable book reviews, starting with "Spinning-Wheel Stories"  -- please drop by for a look at http://blog.pgdp.net/. They will shortly be issuing Twitter updates.

The F2 Evaluation Team and I have been busy reviewing possible approaches that may help our F1 members gain the skills and experience to advance on to F2 more easily. To that end, we've requested input from interested members via the F1 Foofers Team.

rfrank is looking for volunteers who would like to try post-processing but haven't started because of the steep learning curve. He's running a pilot project called FPN to PP project using a simplified formatting method. If you're interested, please PM rfrank.

OVERVIEW OF THE MONTH

The latest copy of the new Privacy Policy is being reviewed by the Board.

Since February is a short month, it's not surprising that some of the numbers are lower. However, in reviewing our general month over month statistics, we are performing well within normal volumes. It appears that our number of new volunteers is dropping; however, as mentioned in the forums, some of the stats have been inflated by bot registrations and may not be as meaningful as we'd like.

As you'll see in the information below, we're pleased to welcome two new Direct Uploading PPers and a new P3 this month!

GENERAL MANAGER REPORT - MARCH 2014

NEWS

Server/OS Migration to 27K Celebration
March was an eventful month! We started the month with a week-long server and operating system migration. Thank you for your patience and good will during the transition. I'd also like to thank Donovan and all the squirrels for their hard work and dedication in making this major change!

The new server is much more powerful than the previous machine, so you may notice that our system is running somewhat faster. During the change, the server time was switched back in line with the timezone where the server is located. With Daylight Savings Time in effect, that means that our server time is now GMT-4.

We ended the month on a high note, with the celebration of DP's 27,000th unique title -- all 13 Volumes of Edward Gibbon's Storia della decadenza e rovina dell'Impero Romano (the Italian translation of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire). Project Manager/Post Processor paganelli and PP Verifier babymag did an amazing job pulling this massive work together.

News for New PPers
There are now several mentors available to help new PPers learn PPing faster and more easily. If you're new to Post-Processing, please arrange for a mentor. To engage a mentor, simply post in the Help! PPer seeking a PP Mentor forum thread, pick a mentor from the PP Mentors section of the wiki, or send a PM to windymilla.

There are also several new PP projects specifically for new PPers! Please take a look in our Projects for new PP'ers thread.

F2 Qualification Changes
As you can see from our F2 application statistics, many applicants for F2 are unsuccessful. It takes a great deal of hard work, knowledge and skill to be able to handle F2-level formatting. Unsuccessful applicants can't simply reapply right away and hope that the next evaluation of their work will be better -- they need to spend additional time and effort learning and practicing the intricacies of formatting if they are to succeed in their next F2 evaluation.

Consequently, there is a now a 60-day waiting period between reapplications for F2. Applicants who apply and fail, or whose application is cancelled due to not meeting the F2 application requirements will need to wait at least 60 days before applying again. For more information about applying for F2, please read the Are you ready for F2 thread.

P3 Evaluation
As you may have noticed, our P3 evaluation backlog was very large and some applicants were waiting over a year for a response. I'd like to thank K7UQT and cmspence for helping clear up some of the backlog. There is now a new team of evaluators but it will take time for them to be fully trained and then clear up the backlog fully, so, if you're still waiting for P3 evaluation results, please be patient a bit longer.

DP Blog Authors Needed!
Hot off the Press, our DP Blog, has been active over the past month with several interesting updates and book reviews. Readership is growing regularly and a Twitter update version will be coming soon. However, our Blog depends on you -- we need your book reviews, volunteer's stories, Smooth Reading announcements, etc. For more information on how to contribute, please check out the Be a DP Blogger! thread.

The new Privacy Policy has been approved by the Board and is now in place

OVERVIEW OF THE STATISTICS

Since DP was unavailable for a week in March, it's not surprising that some of our numbers for March are a bit lower. This is especially noticeable in the number of new volunteers.

Since this is essentially a quarterly report, I've included some graphs. I've also included some interesting information about the make-up of our projects that are available for Post Processing as well as the names of the books we submitted to Project Gutenberg in March.

As you'll see in the information below, we're pleased to welcome 9 new P3ers this month!

STATiSTICS - as of 1 April 2014

Here are some basic graphs that show DPs activities by month over several years to give an idea of how many pages and projects we've been handling and to help relate our current work to that of previous months/years:

GENERAL MANAGER REPORT - APRIL 2014

NEWS

Sorry I'm a bit late publishing the General Manager's Report. I've been away on holiday.

As you'll notice below from the P3 Evaluation statistics, the new P3 Evaluation team has been quite busy this month learning the complex details of their new duties and applying what they've learned to the backlog.

Many thanks to K7UQT and cmspence for working with the new evaluators and for the evaluators themselves for working so hard to get up to speed.

Hermit00 has set up a new thread to request projects to get through the P3 round in order to use those pages for evaluations:
P3 Help Needed!

I'd like to announce that we have a new squirrel   -- hdmtrad has grown a bushy tail.

TwstofLime has been working hard to put together a DP Navigation Guide aimed at new DPers Beginner's Guide to Navigating DP. Please take a look. If you have any comments, the discussion thread is at http://www.pgdp.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.ph ... dy&start=0

Election
Our sixth annual elections are approaching and we have five candidates! Election ballots will be issued next week.

PPV
Here are the PPV stats for April 2014 provided by the PPV Co-Coordinators:

33 projects (25 English, 6 German and 2 Italian) were PPV'd in April
2014 for 11 different PPers; this was accomplished by 11 PPVers, 6 of whom verified more than one project.

P3 application statuses for April 2014:

45 applications pending (down from 74 at end of March)
15 applications received in April
44 applications processed in April
25 Cancelled/13 Denied
6 promoted to P3!!! Congratulations!!! :Cheer: :Cheer: :Cheer:

The oldest application was 371 days old. This application, and all others prior to January 25 (95 days), are currently either being processed, or have been contacted with a request to bring their proofed pages back up. (This request/offer is being made to all those who have remained active in P2 while waiting, but have let their numbers drop. It may therefore be up to another two months before the last of these are processed.)

The 25 cancelled applications includes 7 of the 15 new applications. These were cancelled due to being significantly premature.

The first evaluation by the new team was completed on April 16, so these stats represent only half a month of activity. (Plus, the new evaluators were still "at school".)

F2 application statuses for April 2014:
0 F2 pending applications
5 new applications
1  application cancelled
4  applications denied

Smooth Reading Statistics:
